2013 Bookerthon

2013 BookerAlthough neither of us have quite finished The Luminaries (cannot bear to rush it!) we are both overwhelmingly in the belief this will win this year.

All the other shortlisters have great things going for them, but The Luminaries has everything. And more! Based on our criteria of readability, significance and style, none could match this murder mystery masterpiece, set in Hokitika during the 1960s goldrush.

The Lowland is the best read for a read’s sake with a nice composition of the opposing tracks two Indian brothers take, with some shocking outcomes. A Tale For The Time Being is an epic, all-encompassing and modern story about the link between a woman who finds a diary washed up on the beach and its author. Harvest is an historically important portrayal of modernisation in the agricultural sector and raises many considerations. We Need New Names is the tear-jerker, with its cast of loveable but hard-done-by Zimbabwean children, and The Testament Of Mary is a unique take on one of the oldest stories in history – the mother-son relationship between Jesus Christ and his mother Mary.

All are wonderful books which we highly recommend, but you can’t go past The Luminaries. Go Kiwi!
